What if dance had never married music?
Movement free of measure, free of time,
how sometimes sun reflecting off the water
brings to mind a music of its own.
In broad daylight even the sounds, Fernando
said, must shine, and I have wanted so
like sounds to live by things and not be theirs,
to circulate as gift or mendicant,
or failing that, at least to see these trees,
dispassionate and pliant, without envy,
bending, bending, bending as a body
bends and does not break, but bears itself
with grace, or energy, or weariness,
alone, unlike the trees in unison.
What troupe of dancers has the unity
of trees, what music the dispatch of wind?
What if dance had never married music?
Movement free of measure, free of time,
how sometimes sun reflecting off the water
brings to mind a music of its own.
In broad daylight even the sounds, Fernando
said, must shine, and I have wanted so
like sounds to live by things and not be theirs,
to circulate as gift or mendicant,
or failing that, at least to see these trees,
dispassionate and pliant, without envy,
bending, bending, bending as a body
bends and does not break, but bears itself
with grace, or energy, or weariness,
alone, unlike the trees in unison.
What troupe of dancers has the unity
of trees, what music the dispatch of wind?
